It is very common to overdo it and end up with inflammation in a joint.  Conditions like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, golf elbow, heel tendonitis can flare and limit your activity.  While standard therapy include rest and topical non-steroidal creams shock wave therapy is emerging as a treatment option especially for people with chronic tendonitis.

Shock wave therapy is non-invasive and is similar to an ultrasound type of procedure.  Ultrasound gel is applied to the affected area and depending on the area pulses are delivered via a hand-held device.  While results certainly vary, improvement can be seen after the first session.  Typical treatments only take 15 minutes and may be done 3-5 times for best results.

***We are now offering shockwave therapy for the following conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis/golf elbow
  • Trigger points (those painful knots in your back)

Shock wave therapy is thought to help by inducing a microtrauma to the affected tissue. This in turns initiates a healing response that welcomes increased delivery of nutrients and blood vessel formation.  All of this helps relieve the symptoms of pain.  FDA has approved the use of shock wave therapy for plantar fasciitis in 2000 and since then it is being used more and more for other tendon inflammatory issues.

A review of studies looking at shock wave therapy in knee soft tissue conditions reported improvement in pain reduction and range of motion.  Similar findings looking at tennis elbow  and plantar fasciitis have been reported.

There is no real downside to the treatment but be aware that doing this treatment doesn’t guarantee complete relief of pain.  How effective this treatment varies by the condition, the duration and severity of symptoms.

We are very excited that our shock wave therapy machine addresses so many conditions.  Call us today to see if we can help you!
